Ingredients 

Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon butter, melted

Baking Soda Bath

  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 4 cups water

Topping

  • to taste coarse sea salt

Instructions 

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  8. Boil each dough ball in the baking soda bath for 30 seconds on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Sprinkle each bun with coarse sea salt.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
