Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg beaten
  • ½ cup currants or raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the Cross

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup water

For the Glaze

  • ¼ cup apricot jam

Instructions

  1. 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of the flour, sugar, yeast, and warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. 2. Add the melted butter, beaten egg, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.
  3. 3. Gradually add the remaining flour and currants, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. 4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. 6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. 7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. 8. For the cross, mix the flour and water to form a paste. Pipe a cross on top of each bun.
  9. 9. Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. 10. While the buns are baking, heat the apricot jam until melted. Brush the warm buns with the jam to glaze.
