Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 225 g self-raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 50 g butter cold and cubed
  • 50 g caster sugar
  • 1 tablespoon treacle
  • 150 ml milk plus extra for glazing

Instructions 

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C (430°F).
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour and baking powder.
  3. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  4. Stir in the sugar.
  5. Add the treacle and enough milk to form a soft dough.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly.
  7. Roll out to about 2 cm (¾ inch) thick and cut into rounds.
  8. Place on a baking tray and brush with a little extra milk.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until well risen and golden.
  10. Cool on a wire rack and serve warm with butter.
