Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions 

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
  6. Cut a deep cross on top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
