Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, then stir in yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam.
  2. Mix oil into the yeast, then beat in 2 eggs, one at a time, with the salt. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time.
  3. Knead until smooth and elastic and no longer sticky, adding flour as needed. Place dough in a well-oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Punch down the dough, and divide into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope; the longer the rope, the longer the braid will be. Braid the ropes together, then place on a greased baking sheet.
  5. Beat the remaining egg and mix with 1 tablespoon water. Brush a generous amount over the top of the braid. Let rise uncovered for another hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Brush the loaf again with the egg wash. Bake in preheated oven for about 30 to 40 minutes, or until golden.
