Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 package active dry yeast dissolved in warm water
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions 

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add yeast mixture and buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
  5. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly.
  6. Roll dough to ½ inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  7. Place biscuits on a baking sheet and let rise for 30 minutes.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
